Located just north of Camp Wood on State Highway 55, this 1936 Texas Centennial marker identifies the former site of a military encampment. Established on May 20, 1857, Camp Wood served as a strategic outpost to prevent raids along the vital San Antonio to El Paso route and the broader Rio Grande Valley. The post was operational for less than four years before being abandoned on March 15, 1861, when Federal troops were withdrawn from Texas at the onset of the Civil War.
